CRV Health
and Efficiency
We believe better cows create a better life for farmers, herds, and the environment. We focus on balancing health and efficiency because healthier cows produce more efficiently, making CRV a global leader in health and efficiency genetics.
CRV's Health index improves fertility, udder health, and hoof health, making herd management easier and reducing the number of cows requiring treatment.
A bull scoring +6% for CRV Health is expected to produce daughters with around 3% fewer issues in udder health, hoof health, and fertility. Traits included are fertility, udder health, hoof health, ketosis, calving ease, calf vitality, and calf survival.

Results of breeding for CRV Health
Practical research shows that breeding for CRV Health works. Cows with +6% for this index have shorter calving intervals, lower incidence of mortellaro, and lower somatic cell counts.
An efficient herd produces more milk or beef using fewer resources, improving both profitability and environmental impact.
Daughters of a bull with +6% CRV Efficiency are expected to produce about 3% more milk from the same feed intake over their lifetime, equal to more than 4,400 lb of additional milk. Traits included are milk, fat, protein, longevity, feed efficiency, calving interval, and body weight, as well as persistency, late maturity, and age at calving.

Results breeding for efficiency
Practical research* shows that breeding for CRV Efficiency works. Cows with +6% for this index have a higher feed efficiency, higher lifetime production and higher longevity.

CRV Health helps breeders create healthier, more profitable herds by improving fertility, udder health, and hoof health. Using top CRV Health bulls results in cows that breed easily, have fewer health issues such as mastitis and ketosis, calve more smoothly, and require less treatment. The result is a more efficient, easier-to-manage herd with improved longevity.

An efficient herd produces more milk or beef using fewer resources, improving both profitability and environmental impact. CRV’s Efficiency index improves feed efficiency, increases longevity, and boosts overall herd production. The main building blocks of CRV Efficiency are production, feed efficiency, and longevity.

The table below shows the effect of using a bull with a breeding value of 104 (one standard deviation) on an average cow.
Breeding Guidelines for Health
Breeding value hoof health 104 | Breeding value fertility | Breeding value udder health |
3.1% fewer hoof problems | 2.2% (cow)/1.8% (heifer) more pregnancies | 1.7% (clinical), 3.0% (subclinical) less mastitis |
$620 fewer costs | 7-day shorter calving interval | 8,000 cells/ml lower somatic cell count |
2.9% higher non return percentage | $620 fewer costs |

The table below shows the effect of using a bull with a breeding value of 104 (one standard deviation) on an average cow.
Breeding Guidelines for Efficiency
Breeding value feed efficiency | Breeding value longevity | Breeding value Inet |
Variation in feed conversion is | 270 days higher longevity | At least $150 higher revenues per lactation |
Feed efficiency results in lower methane emissions | Average number of lactations | Average production |
10% feed efficiency can save $0.02 per lb of milk | One extra lactation saves |

We are driven by progress and aim for farmers to see daily improvements in practice. Healthy and efficient cows make work more enjoyable, benefit the environment, and increase revenue. That is why we continually develop innovative products, services, and breeding values, and this is our promise to our dairy farmers.
